9 Spots for Vegan Tacos in LA

Taco Tuesday, our favorite weekly holiday. From BBQ jackfruit to cauliflower chorizo, LA sure knows how to serve up vegan tacos. And we couldn’t keep it to ourselves, we had to taco ‘bout it. Here are some of our favorite vegan taco joints for you to enjoy too.

1. Chicas Tacos - 728 S Olive St.

Chicas brings the authentic, bold flavors of Mexico straight to your table. Order the Veggie Taco without cheese and you’ve got yourself a vegan cauliflower chorizo taco topped with marinated mushroom, avocado, chile toreado sauce, and cilantro. The Steak Taco can also be veganized by substituting the steak for marinated mushroom and ordering it without the cheese. The chips, salsa, guacamole, and Agua Frescas are all totally vegan as well. Participate in Taco Tuesday and try the Veggie Street Taco, ordered without aioli, for a $2.50 vegan taco treat.

2. Trejo’s Tacos1048 S. La Brea Ave.

This eclectic taqueria offers many delicious vegan tacos including the Black Pepper Tofu Taco, the Rainbow Cauliflower Taco, and the Young Jackfruit Taco. Our personal favorite is the Seared Carrot and Tofu Chorizo Taco topped with roasted shallots, cashew cream, and cilantro. Trejo’s menu houses a few other vegan options including almond milk Horchata.

3. Guisados2100 Cesar E. Chavez Ave.

Serving traditional Mexican comfort food one taco at a time. While Guisados offers a few vegetarian options, these are not vegan. Order, instead, the vegan taco consisting of sauteed red and green bell peppers and onions. This taco is fresh and simple.

4. Plant Food for People - Track the Location of the Truck Here

A vegan taco truck? Sign us up. PFFP serves not one, but four jackfruit taco varieties. “The #4” is the most loaded of the tacos and is topped with slow cooked pinto beans, chipotle mayo, tomatillo salsa, coleslaw and pico de gallo. Vegan nachos and breakfast burritos can be ordered as well. PFFP is noted to have a taco stand coming soon. We are patiently awaiting the grand opening.

5. Sky’s Gourmet Tacos - 5408 W. Pico Blvd.

Perfect for Taco Tuesday, Sky’s Gourmet Tacos features a vegetarian & vegan menu at both their sit-down restaurant and food truck. Vegan taco varieties include Black or Pinto Beans, Vegan Protein, Potato and Vegan Cheese, Tofu, Shiitake Mushroom, or Wild Rice and Yam. Sky’s offers Follow your Heart vegan cheese to be used in tacos, nachos, burritos, quesadillas, and more.

6. Mas Malo515 W 7th St.

Located on Restaurant Row, Mas Malo serves up both traditional and unique Mexican fare. Try the Vegan Mock Ground Beef and Pickle Taco sans cheese. This taqueria also offers a vegan soup and customizable enchiladas with plenty of plant-based fillings and vegan cheese. Bonus: Mas Malo offers a Taco Tuesday specialty where tacos are $2 every Tuesday from 4pm-close.

7. Sage Bistro1700 Sunset Blvd. and 4130 Sepulveda Blvd.

This all-vegan bistro offers a diverse and delicious menu including four varieties of tacos. Vegan tacos include Street Tacos made with jackfruit, Raw Tacos with walnut cranberry meat, Baja Tacos stuffed with tofu and avocado, and “Fish” Tacos created with nori-marinated jackfruit. Sage also offers a vegan tostada and jackfruit nachos. For more places to find vegan nachos, check out our previous post.

8. Atwater Village Tavern3218 Glendale Blvd.

Where Mexican BBQ meets American bar food. Atwater Village Tavern offers many vegan options including Fungi tacos with Soyrizo, peppers, mushrooms, and cauliflower. Veggie and Potato tacos are also offered. During happy hour Street Style Tacos, including the Veggie taco, are only $2.50 each!

9. Gracias Madre - 8905 Melrose Ave.

This 100% plant-based Mexican restaurant uses locally-sourced and organic ingredients. They serve all your Mexican food favorites and have a full bar. Even though this is a taco article and their barbecue jackfruit carnitas are delicious, we also recommend trying their nachos while you're there. Best nachos in the city, in our opinion. Bonus, dine during happy hour (3-6pm weekdays) and score $6 bites and cocktails.
