Heads up, Kalamazoo! There’s a new BBQ place in town. We know. Not your typical vegan go-to. Hear us out. Owner, Mark Nieuwenhuis, says his goal when opening Kelvin & Co. six months ago was to create an inclusive dining experience with options for everyone. You will find vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free items on the menu and specials board clearly marked as well as additional items such as salads that can be easily altered.
A Kalamazoo native, Mark brings years of expertise with a private catering business in Chicago to his new urban barbecue. Kelvin & Co. offers catering services in addition to on-site menu options. Mark stresses that menu items are suggestions with catering clients and that he is open to working with special requests and dietary needs. He also suggests the possibility of future menu expansion and additional vegan options should the demand present itself.
Today, we sampled the smoked tofu with signature house BBQ sauce, baked beans, and collard greens. All dishes are made from scratch in house. And, no, those beans don’t contain any lard! Mark takes pride in the fact that Kelvin & Co. does not utilize a microwave or freezer and refuses to serve sub-par foods. We can attest to the deliciousness of the meal, the fresh taste, and the gorgeous presentation. All BBQ sauces are vegan and gluten-free. Vegan salad dressings include the Carolina dressing and the Smoky Chipotle Vinaigrette. Dining with a vegetarian friend? You will find plenty of veg options on the menu as well, including regular mac and cheese, jalapeno mac and cheese, cole slaw, potato salad, cornbread, and sweet potato pie.
Kelvin & Co. is located at 232 E. Michigan Ave. and is open 11am-8pm Monday through Saturday.
