J. Gumbo’s: Kalamazoo Cajun

3205 S. Westnedge Avenue.

Kalamazoo’s newest Cajun restaurant, J. Gumbo’s, opened doors for business at 10:30 this morning. A Louisville-based fast-casual chain, J. Gumbo’s offers down home, Louisiana style cooking. With two vegan entrées on the menu, you can order straight off the line with no need to alter. The White Chili (the VegOut favorite!) and the Creole Ratatouille are both vegan and served over either white or brown rice. The rice contains no meat broth so is totally plant-based. Careful, though, the meal is served with a side roll that is NOT vegan. No worries. We spoke with Angie, the owner, who assured us it is absolutely acceptable to sub out that roll for a side of tortilla chips. Just ask!

Not sure which dish you’d like to try? Gumbo’s offers samples so you can taste before you buy. Warning: Once you sample both the White Chili and the Ratatouille, you’ll be coming back for whichever dish you didn’t get the first time. As an added bonus for those with gluten insensitivity, both these entrées are gluten-free. Just to note, while the menu does offer a lacto-ovo option called Bumblebee stew (black beans, corn, tomato, onions in a sweet and spicy combo cream sauce) all entrées are premade so you have to take them as they come. No altering ingredients allowed. We’re especially loving the mantra paraded across the White Chili description on the J. Gumbo’s website: “Dispelling the myth that vegan food is bland and boring!” You go, J. Gumbo’s!

J. Gumbo’s: fast, friendly, and freaking delicious. What are you waiting for?
