Going out with the family but everybody wants steak? What’s a vegan to do? Believe it or not, there are many great vegan options at steakhouses. Best bet is to check out the sides, the appetizers, and the salads. And don’t be afraid to ask if you can order off menu. As long as the kitchen stocks the ingredients, the cook might be willing to whip something up. We’ve highlighted a few vegan-friendly items at some of the more popular steakhouses in town.

We had a nice chat with Steve at Logan’s to get the scoop on the vegan items at this popular steakhouse. For starters, you’ve got a giant bucket of peanuts waiting on your table when you sit down. Munch on those while you decide if you’d like to alter one of the salads or go with the vegetable or mushroom skewers. Both skewers are vegan, soaked in an Italian dressing marinade. Also vegan are the fried pickles and fried mushrooms. Try a baked potato with some steamed side veggies. But be sure to order with no butter. The potatoes, generally baked in butter, can be done in oil instead.

Both the pretzel buns and wraps at Brann’s are vegan. Sadly, though, the restaurant uses Morningstar black bean burgers which are NOT vegan. Take that bun and load it with lettuce, tomato, onions, and condiments instead. Order with regular fries or sweet potato fries and you’ve got yourself a meal. You can alter any of the salads to accommodate a vegan diet. You could also order up a big plate of Brann’s Bavarian pretzel sticks. No worries on these as they are egg- and dairy-free and coated in oil instead of butter. But order without the accompanying cheese cup—opt for mustard instead. The baked potato and a side of steamed broccoli are also great options. Again, order both without the butter or sour cream.

Typical of any steakhouse, your best bet here is to alter one of the salads or try a baked potato (or sweet potato!) with steamed veggies. Always remember to ask for no dairy. Clarify that the potato will be baked in oil instead of butter and that veggies will be cooked and served without butter. Remember to leave croutons off salads when ordering as the bread may contain dairy and croutons might be seasoned with cheese or butter.

Need we say it again? Plain baked potato or sweet potato with a side of steamed veggies. Order both without the butter. Clarify that potatoes will be baked in oil instead of dairy. Alter one of the house salads and enjoy with oil and vinegar. Texas Roadhouse also has giant buckets of peanuts for you to munch on while you wait for dinner.
Best rule of thumb when dining at a steakhouse? Snack before you go. Don’t go hungry.
